Contrary to what ‘society’ says about women ‘belonging’ in the kitchen; I cannot cook, fuck you society. But, I hardly think cooking per se, is a skill required in order to boil an egg and successfully shell it thereafter.
December is almost here and to celebrate my favorite holiday of the year, my birthday 🙂 I usually host some event at my home where I invite the people who can tolerate my food and those willing enough to try it, to mingle and have a holly jolly feel good time.
This year, I decided to host something different–Brunch. I’ve never done brunch before and while I had an idea of what brunch was, I still googled to see what a brunch menu looked like. Yay ! Deviled eggs, my favorite, definitely a must do!
This morning however, after boiling and attempting to shell four eggs, I ended up egging the shells instead, anxiety struck when I imagined the cataclysmic disaster I’d have come December when it was time to make those deviled eggs. I absolutely hate shelling eggs. I can never get it right.
So there I was shelling all the white off all four of these eggs, luckily there was like one half decent layer left, enough to still be able to refer to it as an egg –any more and it would just have been boiled yolks for breakfast.
As I peel layer after layer, I’m cussing, cussing the shell, cussing the egg and cussing at my over zealous deviled eggs idea. Imagine the disaster it would be if I boiled perhaps 24 eggs for this Brunch that I am having and couldn’t shell the damn things. Ugh!
This is my first time participating in the Daily Post’s Daily Prompt. It was too uncanny an event this morning, after just having that cuss fess with my eggs for breakfast then logging on to my blog and seeing ‘egg’ as the prompt today for me not to depart from my regularly scheduled posts to regale you with what took place. 🙂
I think I’ve tried it all but just in case I haven’t, how do you shell your eggs or are you as hopeless as I am…? What works for you? Let me know in the comments will ya… Happy Sunday by the way…!
I actually have nothing of value to add here I just found this piece quite entertaining. Fuck the eggs yes, but peeling egg shells can be a pisstake at times so I understand.

Owh man, I agree that peeling eggs is an extremely frustrating job but heres a bunch of things you can try and I hope it helps! 🙂
1) When boiling eggs, add a pinch of salt to the water
2) After you have boiled your eggs, take them out and put them in cold water for a minute.
3) After you have boiled your eggs, take them out and put them in a plastic container and shake well. It helps the shells to separate from the eggs.
Also happy birthday! 🙂

🙂 Thanks much..it’s still a good way off… Thanks for the tips..lol… I just imagined shaking them to a scrambled consistency in the container…hahah…

Good pointers.
But yes, the shaking to peel them is a dangerous thing. I did it once and I ended up with eggs in chunks. They just fell apart. Maybe I was too angry and shook them too much?!
Also, sometimes there is nothing you can do, since I read that fresher eggs are more difficult to peel. Serve old eggs instead?

Ah brunch, not quite breakfast, not quite lunch but it comes with a side of cantaloupe at the end. You don’t get completely what you would at breakfast, but you get a good meal.

I suck in the kitchen too and hard boiled eggs seem like THEY SHOULDN’T BE HARD.
About a year ago I found a “recipe” for hard boiled eggs that has actually been working for me. I tend to have…better results. I still screw them up. But maybe it’ll word for you?

Lol, I had fun reading this post, and by the way happy birthday.
If it helps, my grandma used to say that even if one bakes bread every week (that’s the way they did it), it is no guarantee that it come out as good every time… 🙂

So what I do with eggs is take a small jar, like the size of a small peanut butter, put water in it, put the egg in and shake it. The shell will come off perfectly:) Hope this helps:)

I usually lose at least 2 or 3 per dozen due to failure to peel lol. I also love deviled eggs! Yum! There are some weird tricks out there. I saw something about baking soda. I saw a video about putting the egg in a container and shaking it and it perfectly peels. I haven’t tried those though lol. I did once try the rolling it method and it was an epic fail.

Oh, the rolling method… I think I might have some pent up stress, because when I shake in the container, they bounce around so hard that they fall apart. When I tried rolling, I ended up squishing them.

😂😂😂 ive had that happen… didnt associate with stress though… that could have been the cause…

I tried the jar method for thanksgiving. It didn’t work even in the slightest for me lol

Who would have thought that such simple things like eggs would give us headaches?!

Haha right!? This year I lost 2 due to failure to peel. Maybe I’ll try the baking soda approach next.

In spite of being a fuck-you-society kind of person, I’m actually not a bad cook. Adding salt to the water’s supposed to keep the egg shells from breaking while they boil, and for the most part it seems to work. If it does anything to make the peelable, I don’t know about it. I’ve read that dumping them into cold water helps. It doesn’t help me. I have tried rolling them on the counter so the shell shatters. That might actually help, but it doesn’t always seem to. I suspect it depends on the egg itself. Maybe it has to be in a good mood when you cook it. Maybe you should sing to it. Maybe we should all learn to not worry about it and serve pock-marked eggs. Proudly.
Happy birthday.

Super funny post! Can’t help with the egg thing; I am pretty much a disaster in the kitchen myself. I think it is quite brave of you to take on deviled eggs!

I googled this once! I think it has something to do with the temperature of the egg and whether or not you ran cold water on them or something! I hate when it happens. So annoying!

Were they old eggs or new eggs? One type is easier to peel than the other, I just can’t remember which…
Yeah, I’m pretty useless when it comes to peeling eggs.
However, if you want perfectly shallow-poached eggs, I’m ya gal 😉

Ha. Hysterical! I feel your pain. My boys and I often make colored Easter eggs and then want to have some pretty peeled eggs–that often turn a bumpy mess. Really though, deviled eggs are wonderful no matter how they look! I do think I’ve heard older eggs are better than fresher ones. Another tip is to peel under cold water. Good for you for posting on the daily–I haven’t done that yet.

Follow these steps and your eggs will be perfect every time
Eggs must NOT be fresh older than 10 days
Don’t let them boil forever select the time based on egg size too
After cooking immerse the eggs into ice water to shock them
If you follow these steps you will have perfect boiled eggs, no horrible grey line at yolk and they will peel easily

It’s the grey/bluish rim (or even the yolk itself) that says overcooked.

I actually detest all eggs. It’s the one and only food I cannot tolerate. But I make them for my family because they all like them. Try adding a bit of vinegar in the water as they are cooking. This helps. Then do the shaking in the jar!

Ha!! I thought I was fuckin alone!!! My eggs ALWAYS look like yours!!! I just eat them anyways lol and I tell myself “it’s not about the looks ely stop being so superficial, stop judging the eggs… they taste THE SAME” and that’s basically how I get through it…. by treating my eggs like the little boy from Wonder and convincing myself that they need love too. 🤦🏻♀️

Peeling eggs ranks up there with peeling potatoes in my book. Strongly dislike doing both activities. Sometimes the eggs turn out so beautiful and perfect, but most often it looks like I tried to chew the fucking shell off with my teeth.

Blooming eggs!
I tried making ramen eggs (which is similar, but they are soft boiled, so even more bloody annoying and hard to get out of the shell without them becoming a gooey mess!!) I discovered that the only time they are easy to peel is when the eggs are super-super-fresh. So, if you have any local hens (I tried with some from my sisters hen house that were laid the previous day) *that* was easier…

hahah… I had eggs this morning I got was able to successfully peel two out three… which according to the Meat Loaf “ain’t bad” :D… but ramen eggs…?

Ramen eggs are soooo good if you can peel the bastards!
You soft boil them and then marinade them in soy/mirin. Then, just before you eat a bowl of noodles you chop them in half and pop them on top of the soup.
